5-5 Holiday Drive

5-5 Holiday Drive

5-5 Holiday Drive to benefit the DVCCC We’re excited to announce that our 3rd Annual holiday drive was a success!  With your help, we raised $750 and hundreds of dollars’ worth of supplies for the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC)  These gifts will go far in helping the DVCCC support local victims and their families while they get back on their feet. The work that the DVCCC does for our community is tremendously important.  According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in three women and one in four men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by a partner in the U.S. The physical and emotional effects of trauma can last a lifetime. Domestic victimization is correlated with higher rates of depression, suicide and chronic illness, and between 21 and 60 percent of victims of intimate partner violence lose their jobs due to reasons stemming from the abuse. For these reasons and more, this tragedy that happens behind closed doors has effects on the entire community. The DVCCC is doing the essential work of supporting victims of abuse and also proactively runs programs to educate Chester County residents about the symptoms and effects of partner abuse.  Their services include a 24-hour emergency hotline, adult counseling, legal services, children’s services, educational programming, housing, and connections to area resources.  All of these services are provided for free. In fact, the DVCCC is the only state-recognized agency in Chester County that provides free, comprehensive counseling and legal options to clients.  Local victims and their children receive the support and protection they need so that they can heal and become independent. “The DVCCC is an amazing organization,” says Vital Touch Wellness owner, Jen McLamb. For the last two years, Vital Touch Wellness has been giving chair massages to the staff and volunteers there.  Jen was so moved by the work they do that she wanted to do more for the people that they serve.  “One thing that especially impresses me about the DVCCC is their dedication to outreach and education,” Jen explains. “Domestic violence and child abuse is something a lot of people don’t want to talk about.  But it’s happening much more than we realize, and that’s devastating. The more people learn about this problem, the more that can be done to stop it.” Increasing awareness, Jen says, is another big part of the 5-5 Holiday Drive. “Because another important fact I learned from the DVCCC is that the effects of domestic violence reach far beyond the home.  It impacts our schools, businesses and our whole community.” It’s not too late to help this amazing and essential local organization. See the list below for items the DVCCC needs to run its office and support the survivors. Can also make a direct donation online at www.dvccc.com. What Is Cupping Therapy?

What Is Cupping Therapy?

What Is Cupping Therapy?  Part One: Soma Cupping Most of you have probably seen the recent coverage of Olympic athletes with the red spots on their backs and shoulders, revealed to be the results of the application of a therapy called “cupping.” While it is a relatively new treatment for modern athletes, the practice of cupping has been around the block for a long time.  Developed over 3000 years ago and documented in various ancient cultures such as China, Egypt, and Greece, cupping therapy was used to treat disease, resolve structural issues, and improve the flow of chi.  The technique uses cups and suction to create a vacuum next to the skin and thus stimulate blood, lymph, waste products, and other body fluid to flow through and out of the area. Before modern technology, cupping was typically practiced by heating the air inside glass, bamboo, or clay cups and turning them upside down on the skin to produce the desired vacuum effect. Today, we can minimize the risk of burning and enhance our control of the cups by using several very cool inventions.  We use two of these applications at Vital Touch Wellness:  hard, plastic cups that work with a vacuum pump; and soft silicone cups.  Each elicits a similar and yet somewhat different response in the body.  We’ll focus on the soft silicone cupping in Part One of this series. Soma Cupping Therapy Licensed massage therapist Gregory Gorey developed specific techniques for using the silicone cups that he named Soma Cupping. The way these soft, clear cups works is quite simple:  a trained massage therapist squeezes the cup, gently presses it onto the skin, and as she lets go, flesh gets drawn up into the cup as it “sticks” to the body.  It’s easy for the therapist to adjust the suction to get just the right amount.  Then the therapist may leave the cup in place for a few seconds to a few minutes, or she may apply massage lotion so that she can slide the cup around, stroking, angling, or even twisting the cup for best results.  Soma Cupping is quite gentle and rarely leaves marks on the skin.  What does Soma Cupping do for the body? The effects of these little cups is amazing. The negative pressure they produce gives them a unique advantage to traditional hands-on massage. Instead of pressing and rubbing, Soma Cupping lifts and separates tissues off of each other, creating space and bathing the tissues in fluid.  This has a similar effect to soaking a dry, brittle sponge in water – our rehydrated fascia (the tissue that wraps our muscles and organs and is full of sensory nerve endings) becomes pliable and supple, increasing our range of motion, improving lymphatic and blood circulation, and reducing pain and stiffness.  The added beauty of Soma Cupping is that it can produce the effects of deep tissue massage and myofascial release with less pain for the client. * We can use cupping in massage for various other benefits: Relieve trigger points Loosen scar tissue Improve lymphatic movement Soften tight fascia and muscles Stimulate weak tissue What issues can Soma Cupping help? So what does all this talk of fascia softening and lymphatic function mean for you?  Could you benefit from your therapist adding cupping to your massage?...

The Vital Touch Wellness Massage Donation Project

The Vital Touch Wellness Massage Donation Project

We’re super thrilled to announce that through our holiday promotion, we raised 1800 minutes of massage! That means this spring we’ll be donating 16 hours of chair massage to the staff of the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County and 14 one-hour massages to the women who are served by Bridge of Hope of Lancaster- Chester County. A resounding “thank you” to all the clients and customers who purchased gift certificates and helped us break last year’s record! How Was This Project Born? Two years ago I felt personally called to reach out and see if in some way, we could bring the healing power of massage therapy and compassionate touch to a population that could deeply benefit. The Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC) serves many women who have been physically and emotionally abused and provides programs to stop domestic violence in our area.  When I reached out to them and asked if there was some way Vital Touch Wellness could help, their coordinator and I came up with an exciting idea.   She explained how hard the staff at DVCCC works, and that they are so busy opening their hearts and giving time and energy to the women that they serve, but rarely stop to take care of themselves. She and I agreed that massage would benefit their staff just as much as the women that they serve.  Last year, we spent 13 hours doing chair massage for the devoted, compassionate, and very busy staff at the DVCCC. I also reached out to a local charity that I have a lot of respect for – Bridge of Hope.  They run amazing programs that empower homeless single moms with dependent children to achieve housing, employment, self-confidence, and independence. I worked with them a few years ago at an event that was rewarding graduates of their program.  I was very impressed with their holistic model that addresses not only the practical issues of jobs and finances, but also strengthens women’s social, emotional, and spiritual health. Last year we donated 10 one-hour massages to the women who are working hard in their programs. If you feel touched by the work of these amazing local organizations, I encourage you to learn more about giving directly to these groups. Check out Bridge of Hope of Lancaster-Chester County at www.lancasterchester.bridgeofhopeinc.org and click “Mentor and Give” to see how you can help. You can learn more about the DVCCC at www.dvccc.com. Click “You Can Help” to donate. On behalf of Vital Touch Wellness, DVCCC, and Bridge of Hope, I am grateful for each and every one of you who helped us raise 1800 minutes of massage to donate to these amazing local organizations! Thank you for your support, Jen McLamb,...
