Lymphatic Drainage Massage is Back!

What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle technique specifically designed to stimulate the circulation of lymph through the body. Lymph is a clear fluid that surrounds our cells and picks up the waste products that they produce, transporting it through a fine network of vessels. A specially trained therapist uses techniques to clear the waste and systematically guide this fluid to lymph drainage sites. Lymphatic massage speeds up the removal of waste products, including bacteria, viruses, and cellular debris, so they can be broken down, removed by the bloodstream, and replaced with healthy new cells.

Lymphatic drainage massage aids in purifying and regenerating tissues while enhancing organ function, metabolism and the immune system. Combined with your Tailored Massage Therapy experience, lymphatic drainage can be both deeply healing and extremely relaxing.

Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Massage

The proper functioning of the lymphatic system is critical to our body’s ability to drain fluids, detoxify, regenerate tissues, filter out toxins and foreign substances, and maintain a healthy immune system.

  • Relieves symptoms of sinusitis
  • Reduces edema in pregnancy
  • Prevents swelling after surgery or injury
  • Boosts immune system
  • Promotes detoxification and anti-aging
  • May improve skin conditions such as acne and eczema
  • Aids in tissue regeneration from burns and scars
  • Beneficial for post-surgical lymphatic rerouting after mastectomy or major cosmetic surgery
  • May relieve symptoms of chronic venous disease, especially in conjunction with surgery

How does it work?

Our lymphatic system is a complex system comprised primarily of vessels and nodes. Unlike the circulatory system, which uses the pumping of the heart to circulate its blood flow, lymph vessels rely upon the contractions of hundreds of tiny muscular units. These contractions propel numerous substances (i.e., proteins, toxins, hormones, fatty acids, immune cells) to our lymph nodes, which can then process them.

The function of these little muscles can be impaired due to numerous factors: fatigue, stress, lack of physical activity, emotional shock, cold temperatures, infections, substantial swelling, age, even chemicals or food additives. When the lymph circulation stagnates, toxins accumulate and cellular functioning is significantly compromised. Poor lymphatic circulation can lead to congestion, swelling, decreased immunity, poor cellular function and more.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage involves the use of subtle manual maneuvers to aid in the recirculation of the lymphatic flow. The therapist uses very light pressure and all their fingers to stimulate wavelike movements that mimic the actions of the lymph muscles. From there, they can assess overall lymphatic circulation and determine the best pathways for draining lymph and other body fluids.

We offer lymphatic drainage as part of a complete tailored massage.

Your therapist will treat specific areas with the appropriate drainage techniques to meet your individual needs. He’ll also blend other massage techniques on the rest of your body for a completely customized experience. For instance, you may have lymphatic drainage on your face and neck for sinusitis, and deep tissue and Swedish massage to treat muscle tension on the rest of your body.

The gentle rhythm and pace of Lymphatic Drainage Massage is extremely relaxing to your nervous system. Afterwards, it’s normal to feel tired and thirsty. It’s best to drink plenty of water and plan to rest after your treatment.
